Here are some practical tips on how to identify a Thai ladyboy. There are countless katoeys (ladyboys) in Thailand that can be identified from a block away. But there are also many that are very difficult to distinguish if they are actually male or female. Some ladyboys are almost impossible to pinpoint even upon close inspection and fully nude. Especially after getting extensive cosmetic surgery. “Katoey” is the Thai term for ladyboy and it is is often used by the foreign expat community as well.
Imagine… you’re in Pattaya for the first time and you’re enjoying a drink in one of the many beer bars that are abundantly found everywhere throughout the city. There are girls all over the bar and many of them want your attention or maybe you have one, two, or three girls sitting with you and keeping you company. But something just doesn’t seem right with one of them. Maybe something doesn’t seem right with many of them. Something that you just can’t pinpoint.
Well that could quite possibly be because it’s a Thai ladyboy. After getting full cosmetic surgery (often the adams apple removed as well) it can often be difficult to distinguish a ladyboy from a real girl and even up close.
While most residents of Pattaya and seasoned visitors have probably developed an ability to recognize ladyboys and even from a distance, people who are new to Pattaya are often at risk of making a huge mistake and are unable to tell the difference.
In fact, quite often there are guys who think they have picked up the most gorgeous Thai girl, just to find out that the girl of their dreams is actually is not a girl at all. So if you are a first-time visitor, here are a few basic guidelines on how to pin-point a ladyboy and tell a katoey from a real girl.
What To Watch Out For
What most ladyboys have in common is an unusually feminine behaviour and overly exaggerated sexy walk. Most katoeys overdo the sexy walk on their high heels and walk like divas on a cat walk. Their often outlandish dress style (short skirts, high heels, lots of lipstick and heavy make up) is another hint that it’s a ladyboy.
In addition, while most ladies in Pattaya, including professionals who have entered the sex trade, are often a little shy and reserved when it comes to making contacts with strangers, a typical Thai ladyboy is anything but shy. In fact, Pattaya ladyboys, especially those who work as “professionals”, are extremely straight forward and often pushy when it comes to chatting with strangers on the street and making very obvious and often unwanted sexual advances.
Aside from being taller, more girlish and usually less shy than your average Thai bar girl, ladyboys can also easily be recognized by a deep masculine voice, the large size of their feet and hands, shoulders wider than their hips and, often, an adams apple (although often the adams apple is as well removed by cosmetic surgery).
There are some ladyboys that are just about impossible to distinguish if they are a man or a woman. Mostly concentrated in some of the gogo bars in Bangkok. There are one or two gogo bars in Nana Plaza that have a mixed staff (ladyboys and real females) working and unless you spend some time talking to them and picking up subtle hints that “she” is actually a “he” you can often be easily fooled. The biggest thing to watch for is behavior with slight characteristics in overall shyness and body language.
To sum up, how to identify a Thai ladyboy
- Deep masculine voice. But not always.
- Tall with big silicone breasts. Although not always the case because many take birth control pills for the female hormones which enables them to grow actual breasts.
- Wide shoulders, big feet and hands, adams apple. (after full cosmetic surgery the adams apple is often surgically removed)
- Exaggerated feminine behavior, overly exaggerated body movements and overly sexy walk.
- Not at all shy and often a little pushy.
- ID card. Full cosmetic surgery or not, a ladyboy’s ID card will always state that the person is male. Keep in mind that ID cards can be faked.
